The birth of Jesus on the night of 24 to 25 December led to the founding of the Christian community. The Orthodox Church, as in Russia, traditionally celebrates Christmas two weeks later.
The famous Christmas tree, decorated and lit up as we know it today, has its origins in popular superstition. The tree was supposed to protect the family and home between Christmas and New Year’s Day, when the nights are at their longest and coldest, against the intrusion of devilish spirits of darkness.
At first, the church tried in vain to make a stand against these manifestations of superstition. However, in the 18th Century, it had no choice but to accept this persistent popular tradition and even decided to take on the custom itself, which is how the Christmas tree became part of Christian symbolism.
